ABSTRACT

The study investigated the influence of westernization on the morality of secondary school and undergraduate students in Benin Metropolis. To guide the study, four (4) research questions were raised; What are the similarities in behavior between secondary school students and undergraduate students due to Westernization in Nigeria? What are the striking differences in behavior between secondary school students and undergraduate students due to Westernization in Nigeria? What is the role of religious and academic institutions in the fight against the negative effects of Westernization on the moral values of students in Nigeria? What ways have students in both secondary schools and tertiary institutions been morally adjusted positively against the negative effects of Westernization? The design adopted for this study was the descriptive survey research method.. The population of the study was a total number of forty six thousand, two hundred and thirty two (46,232) students in the University of Benin, and seven thousand, seven hundred and ninety (7,790) secondary school students in twelve (12) public secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area, Benin City.. The sample size for this study was a total number of two hundred (200) respondents. They were selected using the simple random sampling method. The data retrieved from respondents after sampling was analyzed by the use of a Computer Statistical Tool (SPSS), and the results were displayed on tables using frequency and percentage to represent the data. The findings of the study revealed that there is a wide gap that exist between students and morality. Also, it was found that a major propagator of westernization among students is what they watch on television screens and movies. Also, what they see celebrities do on social media. It was therefore recommended that religious bodies should put in more efforts in redirecting members back to morality. It was also recommended that government and other concerned bodies should organize programmes and seminars to develop students all-round. Lastly, but not stating the least, undergraduate students should show good character and examples for secondary students to imbibe and follow; which first is the way they adorn themselves.
