ABSTRACT

The normal precorneal tear film forms a continuous covering over the corneal surface. Tear film quality can be assessed using invasive and noninvasive techniques. The test can be called Tear Break-up Time. This can help in the diagnosis of Dry Eye Disease. Tear film break-up time is the interval between a complete blink and the first randomly distributed dry spots. The keratometer as well as the slit lamp with the use of fluorescein can be used to assess tear quality. The purpose of this study is to determine if there is a difference between Keratometric tear break-up time and Fluorescein tear break-up time. This study was carried out on 50 students of the University of Benin with a mean age of 23.28 ± 1.05. Their tear quality was assessed using a keratometer and a slit lamp. Fluorescein strips were used with the slit lamp technique. Data obtained was analyzed using tables, charts and paired T-test. Results showed no significant difference between keratometric tear breakup time and fluorescein tear breakup time (p>0.05).
