ABSTRACT

This research work is based on a comparative study of two dialects of the same language. It showcases a detailed comparative analysis of the sound systems of the ijebu and oyo dialects, both which are dialects of Yoruba. The objective is to capture the obtainable similarities and differences found in the sound systems of the ijebu and oyo dialects of Yoruba, check the level of mutual intelligibility of these dialects, in order to know the linguistic link between these dialects. This is by “ ” q G q alongside a word list of four hundred words. In this regard, the focus of this project is the sound systems of the ijebu and oyo dialects of Yoruba to find out the similarities and differences. The segmental sounds (vowels and consonants), and the suprasegmentals (tones and syllable) of both dialects were examined. The relevance of this work is to serve as a source to further researchers.
