ABSTRACT
This study is a Comparative Study of the Attrition-rate Of Students to the Study of History in Senior Secondary Schools in Ezinihitte Local Government Area of Imo State. The study adopted the Descriptive Survey Research Design.. The population consisted of all students of Secondary Schools in Ezinihitte Local Government Area of Imo State. A self designed instrument tagged Questionnaire on the Attrition-rate of Students to the Study of History in Senior Secondary Schools was used to collect data for the study. The instrument was validated by research experts in the Faculty of Education. Simple percentage was used to analyze the data. The findings from the study showed among other things that students who find it difficult to see the long term benefits and future prospects of studying History may be more likely to leave the program. The result further showed that schools in Ezinihitte Local Government Area, Imo State that offer a well-structured and engaging History curriculum that connects Historical concepts to real world relevance may experience lower attrition rates. Based on the findings of this study, it was recommended that the school should try as much as possible to emphasize the long-term benefits of historical knowledge in developing critical thinking, analytical skills and informed citizenship, among others. It was also recommended that the school should try to celebrate students’ achievements and milestones in the study of History to boost their confidence and motivation as well as the need for the school to identify struggling students and provide immediate assistance.
