ABSTRACT
The antimicrobial activities of twenty-two cosmetics on selected bacteria were investigated. A total of the five samples was taken from students faces using sterile swab stick. Each sample were soaked in 10ml of peptone water. Then they were shaken to make an even solution. Agar plates were incubated at the temperature of 37oc for 24hours. Bacteria counts were carried out on each of them. Identification of bacteria isolates was done using standard microbiological guidelines such morphological (size, shape, arrangements, staining property and spore formation) Colonial (texture, elevation, margin and color)and biochemical (catalase, oxidase, urease and indole production) characteristics.Bacteria recovered were S.epidermis.,Streptococcus sp., Aeromonas sp , Eschericia coli, Pseudomonas sp., Bacillus sp ., Citrobacter sp.,and Enterococcus sp.The antibiotic sensitivity profile was done using a routinely used antibiotics(Ciprofloxacin, Erythromycin Gentamicin Amoxicillin and cefriaxon) was carried out using Disc diffusion method. The total heterotrophic count ranged from 1.2X105-3.5x105cfu/ml. Bacteria isolates showed varing resistance to the antibiotics used in the study. Staphylococcus epidermis shows sensitive to all the antibiotics with the exception of cefriaxon sodium while Aeromonas sp. Shows resistance to all the antibacterial agents used. Therefore, antibacterial activities of facial cosmetics should be of great concern to many.
