ABSTRACT

This project is a Lexicostatistics Analysis of Ikare and Akure language spoken in Ondo state and The Standard Yoruba (The Oyo language). The study compare these languages to determine their level of relatedness using the lexicostatistics approach. The objective of this work is to establish the relationship between the Ikare and Akure language and to examine if they are a variety or dialect of the Yoruba language. The methodology for the research involved both the primary and secondary method. The primary method was an informal observation and an oral interview with the native speakers of Ikare and Akure dialect The secondary method included a review of relevant materials on Lexicostatistics, Dialectology, Yoruba dialects, language classification etc.

The theoretical framework adopted in this study is Lexicostatistic method developed by Morris Swadesh (1952). It aims at establishing linguistic relations on the basis of a quantitative comparison of vocabulary; it is the statistical study of vocabulary to determine their relationship. The study discovered that Akure and Ikare are mutually intelligible and both forms of languages are Yoruboid languages. Nevertheless, we noted that the lexical comparison between the standard Yoruba and ikare is low compare to akure and the distinction in vocabulary is increasing daily.
