ABSTRACT

Background Information: Accommodative facility basically refers to how quickly the eyes adjust to transient targets both at far and at near. In an ideal emmetropic eye, a subject is expected to accommodate easily at various distances. However, in an ametropic condition such as myopia, there are lags in accommodative facility at various distances depending on the degree of the myopia. Purpose. This study is designed to determine if accommodative facility test is sufficient enough to discriminate low power myopia from high power myopia. Materials and Method. The study will be carried out on subjects aged 18 to 35. A +/-2.00 D lens flipper; targets on the Snellen’s Visual Acuity Chart at distance; and near point card, will be used in testing for accommodative facility. This assessment will be done in the clinic monocularly by having the subjects fixate on a given targets at a distance of 6 metres while looking through plus and minus lenses in succession. Data Analysis: The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software was used to analysed all data. Contribution to Optometry: The findings of this study will add to existing knowledge in the field of optometry even as it will help clinicians understand accommodative facility in myopia of different powers.

Keywords: Accommodative Facility, Myopia.
