ABSTRACT

This essay presents a comparative analysis of two works of African Literature: There was a Country by Chinua Achebe and Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Adichie. Through a critical examination of narrative techniques and language, characters and themes, the study seeks to explore the portrayal of the Nigerian Civil War (1967-1970). This essay is divided into five chapters, where chapter one looks into the purpose of study, scope of study, background of authors/ summary of the texts used, review of scholarship and thepretical background. Chapter two delves into the literary styles and techniques used by both authors and a comparative analysis is made as to how they use these literary styles to tell their stories of the war. Chapter three looks into how the authors tell stories of the war from the lens of their characters. Chapter four is the thematic preoccupation prevalent in both texts. Chapter five is the conclusion. Over all, this study aims at contributing to a deeper understanding of the Nigerian Civil War while also highlighting the distinct voices and perspectives of Chinua Achebe and Chimamanda Adichie as master storytellers of the African experience.
