ABSTRACT

This project comparatively examines the social contract theories of Thomas Hobbes and John Locke. The theory of social contract was on the systematic movement from the state of nature to a civil society which is the state. The need to compare these two contractarians became imperative given the interpretations that have arisen from various scholars after them about the importance of the authority and legitimacy of the political state as a creation of human rationality on the one hand. On the other hand, a thorough examination of the question of the rights of the citizens is put in perspective given the possible failure of the state to fulfill obligation responsibilities. While Locke is a supporter of the latter position, Hobbes is credited to the former. John Locke’s theory was that government was rested on the consent of the governed and it was valuable and democratic. Government held power on condition. This project adopts the analytical method in carrying out its research.
