ABSTRACT
Most times, people speak of crude oil as if it is a single indistinguishably homogeneous substance without any unique difference but that is not the case. Crude oils from the different regions of the world are different in both physical and chemical properties. In fact even crude oils from the same region may be different in properties. The API gravity and sulfur content are two major properties used to describe/distinguish a particular crude oil from another. These differences tend to affect the price of crude oils making crude oils from some regions of the world more valuable or superior to others. Sometimes even refiners who are very much aware of these differences are faced with the problem of choosing between two or more crude oil types that is; a high quality/more expensive crude oil or a lower quality/cheaper crude oil.
This work tends to study the characteristics of crude oils from different regions of the world based on their API gravity and sulfur content, selecting a crude type from each of these regions and comparing them to see which is of superior quality based on their chemical properties using charts.
The result of the work shows that crude oil from the different regions of the world are indeed different from each other in chemical properties, hence some of higher quality compared to others and more expensive.
