ABSTRACTComparative linguistics consists of the study of the data from two or more dialects of a single language, or two or more languages. Okolo (2005:225).Comparative study is an aspect of linguistics that is widely studied. However; there exist few works on the comparative study on the sound system of both Edo language (orẹdo dialect) and Esan (ẹwohimi dialect). This research however, aimsat contrasting the sound system of both languages.The methods adopted in sourcing data for this research is both the primary and secondary source of data collection, where the interview method was adopted for collection of data for analysis and data were sourced from written work in Edo and Esan. The theoretical framework adopted was the comparative method of mass comparison propounded by Greenberg (1963).The research found out amongst the following; the similarities and differences between Edo and Esan sound system, the replacement of sounds that are not in Edo sound inventory.
