ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to investigate the causes of students’ poor performance in Chemistry utilizing students from five (5) public secondary schools in Oredo LGA Benin City, Edo State. Five (5) research questions were raised to guide the study in order to attain the study’s purpose. The study investigated students’ perception on the causes of poor performance in Chemistry using a standardized questionnaire delivered to 100 respondents. Mean and standard deviation was used to analyze the acquired data. Based on the study’s findings, it was concluded that poor student performance can be attributed to a variety of variables that, if not addressed effectively, 9 can lead to additional declines in student performance. The teaching approach used by teachers while teaching Chemistry as a subject of concern has a considerable impact on the results of students’ internal and external examinations. The use of instructional materials is also an important factor in determining students’ academic performance in examinations because it improves students’ assimilation rate, influences students’ class engagement and understanding of Chemistry concepts, and influences students’ interest in learning Chemistry. Students' performance is affected by their attitude toward Chemistry, which influences their drive to learn and do well in Chemistry. Teachers' qualifications, experience, and pedagogical skills have a substantial impact on students' Chemistry performance.
