ABSTRACT

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of administration of allium sativum extract and nicotine on blood glucose in alloxan induced diabetic wistar rats. 30 rats were divided into 5 groups of 6 rats per group; normal control rats, diabetic control rats, diabetic rats treated with allium sativum only, diabetic rats treated with nicotine only, diabetic rats treated with allium sativum and nicotine. Rats were treated for 4 weeks after which results of treated N rats were compared with normal control group and diabetic control group. All data were analysed using graph pad prism, paired sample t-test and two way ANOVA. The results were presented as Mean ± SEM (Standard Error of Mean) and P-value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results showed a significant increase in blood glucose level after treatment with allium sativum when compared with normal control but a decrease as treatment progresses when compared with diabetic control; it was also observed that treatment with nicotine only and treatment with nicotine and allium sativum extract showed a significant increase in blood glucose levels when compared to the normal control group, however, there was no significant difference when compared with the diabetic control group. It is concluded that allium sativum has the ability to decrease blood glucose levels in diabetics and nicotine poses a high risk for sustained hyperglycemia in non – diabetics and should be totally avoided in diabetics.
