ABSTRACT

Previous studies on gerundives in Edo were from the morpho-phonological perspective. This study focuses on the morpho-syntax of gerundives of the Edo basic clause. Emphasis is on morphological derivations of gerundives as well as their syntactic roles in sentences. This work therefore analyzes the internal structure of gerundives both in isolation and sentential constructions .Data collected were from primary and secondary sources. The primary source was from interviews of native speakers of the language while secondary sources were from articles and books. The theory used for the work is the descriptive framework (Dixon 1992) which describes individual languages the way they are. The findings of this work include the fact that morphological derivations of gerundives through the circumfix Ọ̀…mwà [ͻ̀…ɱã̀]are related to a similar form earlier posited by Omozuwa (2010) and Omozuwa and Omoregbe (2010) through the circumfix Ù…mwẹ̀ [ù…ɱɛ̃̀]. There is also the copying of the verb or adjective in a sentence to form a gerundive and the positioning of gerundives in focus constructions as well as gerundives as the subject of the Edo basic clause.
