ABSTRACT

The study was focused on the effect of the demonstratіon method on the acadеmic pеrformance of students in Economics in Delta Central Senatorial District of Delta State. The main purpose of this study was to assess the effects of demonstratіon and lecturе methods of teaching on students’ acadеmic achievement in economics in the Central Senatorial District of Delta State. Three research questions and three hypotheses guided the study. The research instrument used for data collection was a selected NECO past questions in Economics titled: “Achievement Test on Division of Labour” (ATDL). The population of the study was one thousand, nine hundred and twenty (1,920) SS2 students in one hundred and forty-four (144) public senior secondary schools in the eight local government areas in the Delta Central Senatorial District. The sample for this study was ninety-six (96) SS2 students in unity model senior secondary school Agbarho drawn from the population of one thousand, nine hundred and twenty students (1,920) representing 5% of the total population. Mean, standard deviation and t-test were used to analyse the data. From the analysis, the results show among others, that there was a significant difference between the acadеmic pеrformance of students in economics taught using demonstratіon method and those taught using lecturе methods in the secondary schools in Delta Central Senatorial District of Delta State. Flowing from the result of this study, recommendations were made amongst others thus: economic teachers should maximize the use of demonstratіon method in the teaching of some selected economic concepts among students than the use of lecturе method.
